Dr. Katherine Myers provides strong support for the weak force in nature

Dr. Katherine Myers, currently a postdoctoral associate in Prof. Ron Gilman's group at Rutgers University, was awarded the 2014 APS Dissertation Award in Nuclear Physics, for her Ph.D. dissertation from the George Washington University (GWU) under the guidance of Prof. Allena Opper (GWU) and Dr. David Mack at the https://www.jlab.org/" target="_blank">Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF). Allena Opper is the chair of the Physics department at GWU.


Dr. Myers wrote her thesis on "The First Determination of the Proton's Weak Charge Through Parity-Violating Asymmetry Measurements in e+p and e+Al Scattering." It describes her research in investigating how the weak force interacts with protons. The four fundamental forces in nature are gravity, electromagnetic, strong and weak forces. The weak force of the proton was expected to be very small, and had never been measured before. 


Dr. Meyer's thesis also won her the https://www.jlab.org/news/ontarget/target-june-2013#Story1" target="_blank">2012 JSA Thesis Prize, which is awarded for the best Ph.D. student thesis on research conducted at TJNAF. In her current research with Gilman's group, she is developing experiments to measure muon-proton and electron-proton scattering in her search for finding new information to solve the "proton-radius puzzle."
