What do Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Beyoncé and Condoleeza Rice have in common?

They all want to ban the word "bossy" to describe women as a way to encourage more women to be empowered to lead. In a video created by Sandberg's Leanin.org, Beyoncé says: "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss." (Read more here.)

This idea had barely been voiced before the detractors began explaining to us that, if we ban this word, others will take its place, or that the words "bossy" and "leader" are not synonymous. See for example, this opinion piece on CNN

 

True- but the naysayers are missing the point, this video helps to remind us to encourage young women and girls to be empowered to be leaders. Maybe the video's existence and simply talking about the issue will encourage a few more young women to become leaders in society. Not talking about empowering women won't encourage anyone!
